Our View on the Government Cuts

Government cuts is starting to affect many of us, how can we cope with the cuts, do the cuts all have to be made at the same time and is the government making cuts in the right places? Our view is that we are sure that there are better ways to make cuts without having such a devastating impact on the economy. The banks are still paying out large bonuses and many public servants are still getting a pay rise at a time when we should be saving money. Surely, the money being used for bonuses could be used to help save jobs and stabilize the economy.

Teachers & Lecturers Strike in London: But Will the Government Listen?

Teachers and lecturers across London went on strike yesterday over the government's proposed pension reforms. However, despite a series of protest there is still a stalemate in the current stand-off between the government and teachers. In the end we will have to wait to see if the government will decide to halt its plan on public sector cuts and pension reforms as part of it's austerity measures.

Slow Growth for the UK's Economy

The UK economy continue to grow slowly and below the growth projected by the coalition government. According to the British Chamber of Commerce, consumer spending is at an all time low, with the rising fuel prices and a freeze on pay packages, means that consumers now have less spending power. This is happening at a time when the banks are still not lending to individuals and small businesses, which all contribute to the slow growth of the economy.

Practice Update

'We are still waiting', that is the message being sent by many Further Education (FE) teachers and lecturers who would like to work in schools. At present the situation in the UK is somewhat bizarre as while primary and secondary school teachers can teach in colleges, college teachers and professionals cannot teach in schools. We are still waiting to for the government to implement the recommendations of the Wolf Report (2011), which calls for this situation to be resolved. The government has not announced any timescale for implementing this recommendation, therefore many FE lectures and professionals are still waiting in limbo for these changes to take effect. We will keep a close eye on this issue and make further announcement as soon as there is any further development.

Easter Break

As the Easter Break approaches many students will be looking to jet off to sunnier climate, where they can bathe in the sunshine and indulge in the various fun-filled activities on the beach somewhere nice and hot. But, you must agree with us that the UK is currently nice and hot, how long will it last? We are not sure but just hope that you will all enjoy while it last. At the same time, for many students exams are just around the corner, while several university students are currently getting set to write their dissertation. Therefore, the Easter break will be a time of preparation for exams, dissertations and other academic pursuits and not just for celebrating... save that for the Summer!
